Blaze has really been lurking around lately. Probably because it was Ashlee's birthday on September 12th. She just turned 21. Blaze was Ashlee's Godfather. We never had the baptism ceremony at the church but we talked about it many times. He loved her so much. He was thoroughly convinced that she was an angel. They would have these sometimes long and sometimes really short conversations (like a wink of his big blue eye and a big grin from her) about her angelic origin. One Sunday he and Ashlee and I were going to church at a church on Del Curto Dr. Blaze was driving. When we pulled into the parking area we saw how people were acting "outside" the church trying to get the best parking spot and how they were treating each other and Blaze looked at me and said, "No Way. I'm not going in there with all those hypocrites. Let's go. I have another church that you will like better anyway." So we took off for a church over on Chicon St. in East Austin. We walked in to a rockin' house of the Lord where there were rhythm instruments in the pews and people dancing in the isles. We stayed for a long time then Blaze yelled out, "Amen! I got to go tell somebody about this." And we left and Blaze was off on another mission. Anyway, back to Ashlee's birthday.

On September 12th of 1988, Ashlee's 7th Birthday, I was broke and depressed and really feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't put together a birthday party for my daughter. The phone rings and it is Blaze. He is so excited and says,"Hey, I'm over at a friend's house at their garage sale and they have this great Teddy Ruxpin Bear that works and everything! and Ashlee needs to have it." (For those of you who don't know, Teddy Ruxpin Bears were one of those 1st expensive computer chip toys that talked. I could not afford to buy it, for sure.) He said he didn't have any money but he thought I might want to get it for her. I told him what was going on and he said,"Oh, O.K." It'll be O.K." "Yea, right Blaze" was my response. The rest of the day is a blur but I remember Pat Belen and I did get a party together. The part I do remember plain as day though is Blaze coming in the door with that Teddy Ruxpin Bear and giving it to Ashlee and making her a very happy little girl on her birthday. I just looked at him. No one there knew about our phone conversation earlier that day, except maybe Pat. Blaze and I made eye contact and grinned at each other. He never missed a beat in his interaction with Ashlee. God Bless You Blaze. Thanks for loving Ashlee the way you do. You hold a very dear place in her heart.

I miss him even I didn`t know him. Heard about Pat Mear`s songs for
him, when they were "singin` songs / straight from the heart"? Pat,
you`re so great. Blaze would`ve loved that one (oh, and I guess Pat the
Big City Girl and Blaze and Townes had a hell of a lot of fun in
Amsterdam!!! ;-))
I`d have loved to join them so fuckin` much!
The biggest Blaze -&- Mears fan all over Germany (and, quite possibly, the
rest of the planet!)

I knew Blaze when he died (but not real well). I was pretty young, and
I remember hearingabout his death before school one morning. Then,
later, going to the restroom and crying with out control for a few
minutes. It really surprised me that it effected me so much. That I
felt so much sorrow. I think it was becuase I could tell how deep he
was by his music, and that is why I felt such a loss. I still miss him.
Stevie too!!

I think that we all love Blaze! He never met a stranger. Blaze was my
god father. I was very young when Blaze died. I remember him like it
was yesterday. I can remember that he would always borrow my toys and
return them covered in duct tape! I never got back my E.T. belt
though. He adopteed it as a hat band. I have a son now and I can't
wait untill I can share the wonderful stories about Blaze that I have
with him! On another note, today we lost a very dear friend, P.J.
Gibson. She and her husband Bobby Joe were also friends with Blaze.
Keep them in your prayers. I love you Blaze.

I found Blaze while browsing Amazon, of all places. Two names jumped
out at me; Lucinda and Townes, and of course the songs they had written
about him. I ordered his CD sight unheard, one of my better
decisions. I am currently sharing with friends and family.

  25/Jan/2002:23:26:35
Love his music and stories and I will help it live on

Has anyone checked out the new Toni Price album,"midnight Pumpkin"?
There is an excellent version of Blaze's song,"oh Darlin'". You can
hear Champ Hood'S voice loud and clear on ths one...no doubt he taught
Toni the song as Champ played with Blaze...now Champ is gone too!!
we're losing all the good ones..from Doug Sahm to Townes to Blaze and
Champ...Austin is not and never will be the same, but THANK GOD for the
memories and the music that remains in our hearts and turntables.

I'm so sad that I was only a nine year old little boy from the north of
sweden at the time when "Live at the Austin outhouse" was recorded.

It feels like I would do anything to be able to be there when he seemed
to have set the Austin outhouse in thoughts and wet eyes.

He must have been a wonderful man.

Last saw Blaze at the Austin Opry House in the late 80's. I hadn't
seen him in a few years....he stopped the show, yelled out my name and
came and gave me hug...damn funny... We went out back with Jubal and
we all talked about old times. We did some roustaboutin' together in
the late 70's. He drove into the Hole in the Wall alley with a new
stationwagon full of singles of "If I Could Only Fly"... "Hey Blaze,
where in the hell did you get that new car?" With a hearty laugh, he
said "let me buy you one and tell you about it...here, take some of
these." He handed me a couple handfuls of 45's. Anyways, I miss his
blue eyes with the mischevious twinkle and waking up on the other couch
and saying "let's go for it..." and doing just that...I think it was
the Aus-Tex Lounge down off Congress...damn. Keep flying you crazy
ol' s.o.b. you...

I left Austin not long after blaze was killed, the light kinda went
out out of things (plus I didn't have anyone to drink with anymore)but
few days go by that I don't think of him.He used to always tell me when
we would get in a fight "ya..but I know things". I guess he did.....to
all the people that loved him not just for the songs but just for him
which was most of it......I miss him too.......Patricia Belen...2001

way his cousin pete has a great voice also.

in about 1976-78 roy and i used to frequent Anderson's Fair in downtown
houston and had the pleasure of playing there with people like Blaze,
Eric Taylor, Nanci Griffith, and countless others.
Blaze did a song that we thought was hilarious called "You Asshole,You".
it was great to find a page for him . man, there were so many great
artists (tortured of course but that is where some of the greatest music
comes from sometimes) artists that nobody ever really heard of, mainly i
guess coz like a lot of us, our demons get ahold and take over and steer
our lives into a spiral and the next thing ya know, you are just
remembering what you shoulda, woulda, coulda. Blaze on , Blaze.
you always had one of the best moustaches i ever saw.

I was very sad to hear that Blaze is gone. I knew him in Houston in the
70s, We used to hang out at Corky's. I met him when I worked at the Texas
Opera House. I live in Connecticut now . Blaze is one of the many great
Texas musicans that I try to turn people onto. I will never forget his
great words, "You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you
can't rub your friends on your saddle." I'll miss you Mr.Foley.

Listening at Blaze when I'm sitting on my room with a cigarette and my
cup of tea while the moon leaves a silver line on the floor...
makes me think that I'm already in heaven

Glorybound 10/Mar/2001:00:06:13
I met Blaze at the Little Five Points Pub in Atlanta, maybe 1984 or
1985. He told me he was Red Foley's son. We talked about Townes, got
drunk, and rode around in taxi cabs bar hopping and having fun 'til
nearly dawn. He crashed on my couch but was gone by the time I got up.
I ran across his name on Napster last night and downloaded a song.
After all these years I now know that the guy that I thought to be just
a charismatic drifter was also one of our great American songwriters
and performers. Someone said something about "entertaining angels".

I have been looking for a way to get Blaze's music for years. Great job!

Read about Blaze for the first time in a dutch music magazine
called "Heaven". Went to the store and listened to his cd "Live at the
Austin outhouse", and bought it. Unfortunately for us: they're lucky in
heaven to have someone like Blaze over there.

in 1971, blaze (fuller) foley and i rented a house together in Memphis,
TN. I had just been thru a rather trumatic experience and he was a
friend during that time. he was the funniest guy I had ever known. He
loved Comedian Jonathan Winters, singer/songwriter Roger Miller and
always stayed up to watch Johnny Carson on television. I have some
very good memories of him. I'm also his first cousin.

Learned about Blaze through Townes. Bought the Outhouse CD this week
and it's great. Some early Townes stuff hinted at a rift between the
two. Anyone know why? They seem to me to be like two peas in a pod.
I guess now they are.

Keep pickin', y'all!

So amazing to find all of this about Blaze. I used to have a casette
tape years ago (late 70's) I was living in Austin. It was a homemade
copy, i think it belonged to a guy named Andrew. Anyway, I loved that
tape and one day Andrew asked for it back. Of course I relinquished,
but I never forgot Blaze. Many moons later, I now live in Washington
DC...but still the memory of Blaze singing a ballad never left me. Now
I can't believe I found stuff on Napster...my download is almost
done...i will hear Blaze for the first time in 20 years. UNBELIEVABLE!

  15/Jan/2001:23:41:18
I first heard If I Could Only Fly on the album Seashores Of Old Mexico
by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard. I knew nothing about Blaze until
Drunken Angel by Lucinda came out. I came here to this site to find out
more. I am very curious about this Blaze and want to hear more of his
stuff...hopefully I find what I need. Too bad things happened how they
did for the man. I want to write a good song if only once...I'm
studying very hard.

I received Live at the Outhouse for christmas this year and it was the
best present I got! I lived in Austin for many years in the late 70's
and it brought back many memories reading the names of the artists and
bars mentioned in this guestbook. Someone mentioned the "Idi Amin" song
I remember a group called the Uranium Savages doing an Idi Amin song. I
wonder if it was the same one. I miss Austin.

Moody's 11/Dec/2000:05:05:30
I was overwhelmed somewhat when I realized that the Hag was doing one
of Blaze's songs. "If I Could Only Fly" was one of my favorites from
the late 70's. I knew Blaze from Corky's in Houston down in the
Montrose area. Every time he'd play I tried to come in and sit in with
him. We played some out back after the gigs, too. Houston was a mecca
then for up and coming songwriters like Blaze, Shake Russell, Dana
Cooper, Michael Marcouliaux, Danny Everitt, and too many to list. I
had not been writing too long then, and all these guys, especially
Shake and Blaze were very supportive and fun to play with and be
around. Blaze did a song "Idi Amin", to the tune of Sweet Betsy From
Pike", that was hysterical. He had a great sense of humor, but could
rip your heart out with a ballad, too. I lost track of him when I
moved back to New Mexico in the 80's, but I always missed that genuine
warmth and love of music that he had, and reflected in his songs. God
bless him...Mark S. Moody, Alb

I heard about Blaze Foley from his mother Mrs. Hackler, I am her
beauty operator, She is a very nice lady and truly loved her son.
I've heard the song If I Could Only Fly, it was great. Iam glad I Mrs.
Hackler gave me this web site,

hi all,

i came across blaze foley through listening to townes van zandt. i
love his music and was blown away by the autin outhouse cd. i also
picked up merle haggard's new cd and think it's great that he is
keeping the music of our drunken angel alive. if i could only fly.....

I discovered Blaze Foley through "Drunken Angel", the Lucinda Williams
song...and I'm really glad I did. I think his songs are completely
amazing. I wish he'd gottn his due when he could've enjoyed it.

Back in 78 or 79, me and a friend drove down to Houston from Conroe
after hearing Blaze on KPFT. He was playin' at Steamboat and we got to
the gig way too early. It was just the bartender, Blaze, and us. We
stepped out in the back and shared a joint while we passed his Martin
around. My friend and I were guitarists and he was real supportive and
friendly. We were just 18 and enthralled with him; a real songwriter!
Years later, I attended a benefit in '92, to raise money for his
headstone in Manchaca,Tx. Lucinda played a good set,and i hefted a few
in his memory.

17/Nov/2000:04:24:40
I knew about Blaze some years ago. I think it was 1991, when Calvin
Russell played in my hometown, Pisa Italy. I remember Calvin playin'
It's Just You and i remember he named Blaze. I still lovin' that song.
Then in 1996 i saw Townes palyin' in Sesto Calende, Italy and that
night (with the great Rick Danko and Eric Andersen) he played Blaze's
Blues. I've search for many years for Blaze's recording. Now i've found
Live at the Outhouse and i'm so happy to hear Blaze's voice. He was
great, very kind songwriter. Recently i've buy new Merle Haggard's cd
and he sing again If i Could Only Fly. Sometime songwriters have no
lucky on earth but the music will live forever in the hearts and in the
memory of the world.Sometimes i think about Blaze and Townes and Rick
and Doug Sahm playin' a great gig in heaven...i'm sure they see us and
i'm sure they're so glad to have give incredible songs and emotions to
this world.
Thanks Blaze for emotions..

I have several remembrances of Blaze. In Houston '78-79, I was lead
guitarist in the Danny Everitt Band with fellow guitarist Gurf Morlix
(Bill Towle), a friend of Blaze's. Apparently Blaze was not that
experienced in showcasing yet, so he would open some of our shows. I
found Blaze personable but trying a bit too hard to be a "character,"
and was told that until recently he had managed a grocery store in
Austin. We would do soundcheck at Corky's in the mid-afternoon, and my
very gentle german shepherd, Sarge, would rest on the club's front
steps, waiting. Anyone could walk past him into the club. Anyone but
Blaze, that is. Sarge growl when Blaze tried to enter. SO funny! Blaze
would come around and tap on the side window. I'd have to let him in
after reassuring Sarge it was okay. Dogs have that weird radar about
people and what registered with Sarge is anyone's guess.

I lost my Blaze tape in an awful divorce. I was so pleased to find this
website so that I may retrieve a CD version of Blaze at the Outhouse. I
sat in with Blaze many times in many Austin honks playing bass. I
remember one night we were so drunk I lost all finger function. Blaze
leaned over to me while he was still pickin (never missed a lick) and
said " Shep go sit down your F*ckin up my gig" I did what I was told
and he and I laughed about that on many occasions. I miss Blaze on a
daily basis he was good for my soul and for that I will be eternally
grateful.

Thank You Blaze
Love,
Shepster

I found the Live at the Austin Outhouse C.D. at a pawn shop near my
house. I don't know what inspired me to buy it, but I sure am glad I
did. He was a great musician and it's really sad that he couldn't have
prouduced more great "grassroots" country.

  21/Sep/2000:16:24:59
I remember playing at The Beach once. Blaze sat in front of me and watch
me play bass. I felt a little intimidated, I hadn't a lot of stage
experience at that time. He told me as i was packing up that he liked my
playing.
he was genuine.
thanks for the website

I knew Blaze very well, shared many a good bottle and many good
times.Once he stole my duck tape, but that was okay cause his clothing
was in shambles. Great memories of Austin haunts-Alamo,Taco Flats, The
Outhouse and of course those middle of the night knocks on the door.
Down in Key West (my other stomping grounds) a few years ago passing
by a couple of sidewalk strummers when I heard one of them say "This
next song is by Blaze Foley" . Had to stop on that note and listen.
Left with a smile in my heart and a tear in my eye.
So Blaze if your out there in cyber-heaven, Ill be coming to see you
one of these days. Have the tape and the ten bucks in hand and
everything will be cool.

  15/Sep/2000:12:12:17
I learned about Blaze through Lucinda's song. I loved the song even
before I learned it was written about him. Once I discovered that, I
had to find out more. I live in Nashville, TN, where most songs are
written by a committee -&- the almighty dollar rules. It's great to learn
about a true artist.

I used to work at Alamo Bar -&- Grill and I met Blaze there, in 1980 or
81. We ran around together when I was homeless, and drank Bloody
Mary's on Sunday morning and partied for a time. I loved it when he
and Townes would come into Alamo. We would have so much fun. I miss
him so much and have long since lost a tape he gave me back then. It
is so wonderful that he is still remembered and loved. He always said
he would be famous after he died. I now have "Live at Austin Outhouse"
and am turnin folks here in Knoxville Tennessee on to him.
